Congressional Art CompetitionTop of Page
It is my pleasure to invite your school to participate in the Annual Congressional Art Competition titled An Artistic Discovery.
This nationwide art competition, created in 1982, has showcased the talents and creativity of hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the United States. One high school student from my district will be selected for the top honor.
The winning student’s artwork will be showcased for one full year in our Nation’s Capitol in the Cannon Tunnel. The winner and one guest will be invited to join Congress members and students from across the nation at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late June 2014 on Capitol Hill. A major airline has graciously offered to fly the winner and one guest to Washington, D.C. for this event. Two round-trip tickets will be offered to the winning student, if the student chooses to attend the ceremony. Additionally, the winner may be eligible for a scholarship of at least $3,000 at a nationally-recognized art school.
The Congressional Art Competition is one of only a few national art competitions that honors the talents and abilities of students at the high school level. I am hopeful that high school students in my district will take full advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions, please contact Shirley Duong, a member of my staff, at 408-271-8700. For your reference, I have enclosed additional information on the art competition guidelines and deadlines.
Sincerely,
Zoe Lofgren
Member of Congress

1st Annual “House STEM App Challenge.”Top of Page
All high school students from the California 19th Congressional District are invited to participate in the first annual “House STEM App Challenge.” This new competition is designed to engage student’s creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields. Established by Members of the United States House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event that allows students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application or “app” for mobile devices, tablets, or computers on a platform of their choice.
Throughout the completion period, participating students will be provided opportunities to engage with various STEM educational partners located throughout the community to mentor and assist with their app development. Students entering the competition must submit their app’s source code online by the April 30, 2014 midnight EST deadline, as well as provide a YouTube video demo explaining their app and what they learned through this competition process.
The submitted apps will be judged by a panel of local experts within the academic field. The winning student’s app in each participating congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website (www.house.gov), as well as displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. Additional details on the House STEM App Challenge will be announced in the coming weeks and provided on my website at: lofgren.House.gov.
I hope that you will participate in this exciting event. Should you have any questions or concerns, please call my staff, Shirley Duong or Ali Ramezanzadeh at 408-271-8700.
